Edfu temple is situated some 65 miles south of Luxor, on the west bank of the Nile. Probably Egypt's best preserved temple, it was built by the father of Cleopatra around the 1st century B.C., and is dedicated to Horus. Probably due to it's late construction, the level of preservation is so good that some of the roofs still survive. The inner chapel is guarded by two black granite statues of Horus the falcon, wearing the double crown of Egypt, although one has been knocked off!
The temple has an abundance of inscriptions on every surface, and these show the religious ceremonies of the time, as well as the usual tales of bravery, wisdom and might of the Pharaoh. If you could read hieroglyphs, this would be the equivalent of "War & Peace"! There is also a hidden echo chamber, from which the priests would announce to the no doubt awe-struck citizens! I felt I needed more time to take all the detail in. I'll be back, though!
